Training and Workshop on Geographical Indications took place throughout the South of India

Friday, February 3, 2017

From 16 to 21 January 2017, four GI training and workshop events for attorneys, advisors and producers took place in Kochi, Chennai, Vijayawada and Bengaluru. The events were a success: over 200 participants attended.

Two GI experts together with officials from the CGPDTM led the sessions as speakers.

The Project Management Team contracted:

  • One European GI expert to present topics on the EU GI system and types, including control and quality standards.
  • One official from the CGPDTM to present topics on the Indian GI system and types including concepts of ‘authorised user’.
  • One Indian GI expert to share information on GI marketing strategies

Both GI experts presented cases on successful vs unsuccessful strategies. Some cases were analysed in depth to explain how IP strategies can be applied professionally. The scope of presenting such cases was to demonstrate that certain strategies can lead not only to the successful commercialisation, but also, and consequentially, to the prosperous and sustainable development of a given community. The EU GI expert shared examples from the EU describing the added value and protection granted to EU registered GIs.

The afternoon was dedicated to a workshop to allow attendees to gain practical experience by drafting a potential strategy for their GIs.

Overall the events were perceived as being positive, not only as regards the format but also the heterogeneous composition of the audience, i.e., attorneys, IP advisors and GI producers working together.

Further GI training and workshop events will take place throughout the North of India in the coming months.
